1. Smoking

Diagnosis of Respiratory Disorders 

1. Physical Examination  

The physical examination of patients with suspected respiratory diseases may show specific signs, including cyanosis, clubbing of fingers, decreased breath sounds, wheezing, crackles, and other abnormal sounds.

2. Chest X-ray  

Chest X-ray is a common imaging modality for the diagnosis of respiratory system diseases. It can be utilised to diagnose conditions like pneumonia, pulmonary edema, lung cancer and pleural effusion.  

3. Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT) 

PFTs are important for evaluating how well the lungs are functioning and for diagnosing conditions such as asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease, and other specific lung diseases. Spirometry is used to measure lung volumes and flow rates in PFT.

4. Bronchoscopy  

Bronchoscopy is a procedure to directly view the airways and take samples for analysis. It is widely used in the diagnosis of lung cancer, foreign body aspiration and airway abnormalities.

5. Biopsy  

Non-invasive tests cannot provide a definitive diagnosis and may require a biopsy. 'Biopsy' means taking out a small piece of lung tissue that is examined under a microscope. This can be useful in differentiating benign from malignant conditions.2 

Treatments for Respiratory System Diseases 

1. Medications  

Medications are important in the management of diseases of the respiratory system. Bronchodilators, including albuterol or salmeterol, are often prescribed for conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). These medications work by relaxing the muscles around the airways making it easier to breathe. Bronchodilators are not the only treatment; in some cases, corticosteroids are also used to reduce inflammation in the airways.

Oxygen therapy may be delivered by nasal cannulae, masks or portable oxygen concentrators, depending upon the patient’s oxygenation needs. The study also mentions ‘lung volume reduction surgery’ (LVRS) and lung transplantation as surgical options for patients with severe COPD or pulmonary fibrosis. LVRS works by removing damaged lung tissue, which helps to improve lung function and decrease hyperinflation, while lung transplantation is reserved for patients with end-stage lung disease. [2]
