Men’s well-being is not only affected by age and physical condition. Energy levels, stamina, physical endurance, stress management, sleep, nutrition, hormonal health and reproductive wellness are what determine how men feel and perform in everyday life.

Long work hours, sleep deprivation, chronic stress, a sedentary lifestyle, nutritional deficiencies, smoking, alcohol intake and poor dietary habits can impact energy, physical performance and overall well-being. The men’s health is best viewed as an overall wellness goal rather than just one aspect of health. All these aspects may contribute in maintaining overall men’s wellness and includes a well-rounded diet, regular physical activity, proper recovery, stress management and appropriate nutritional/ herbal support.

This blog explores about the men's vitality, energy, stamina, physical performance, reproductive wellness, nutrition, lifestyle factors, and herbal support for overall men's health.

Men’s Vitality

A men's vitality includes his energy, stamina, and sexual arousalMen's lives become prosperous both physically, mentally, and sexually with good vitality. Their lives become harmonious with their partners when they have good vitality. Unfortunately, this condition continues to decline with age. A sedentary and healthy lifestyle worsens vitality. In addition, the function of organs such as the heart, lungs, and immune system is also influencing by their vitality.

Men who have vitality have better mental health and become much more confident. A fit body allows them to complete tasks more easily, and good vitality helps men more easily cope with the stress and pressures of life. The ability to manage anxiety and depression is easier. Awake stamina helps men sleep better. As a result, they feel fresher, calmer, and happier. Thus, the mood of men becomes more positive when facing various challenges.

Men's vitality is identical to their sexual life. Men who have strong stamina have higher sexual excitement and libido. A man's body with stamina increases blood flow throughout the body, including to their sexual organs. In addition, testosterone will increase the production of hormones that encourage sexual desire and male libido. Thus, men become more confident and appreciated by their partners. [1]

Energy, Stamina, Endurance, and Physical Performance: What's the Difference?

Energy: Daily physiological functions and physical and mental activity require energy. Proper nutrition, sleep, hydration and general health all factor into normal energy levels.

Stamina: Stamina, in general, refers to the ability to perform a task with little fatigue.

Endurance: Endurance is the ability to sustain physical activity over a period of time. Endurance is a combination of cardiovascular fitness and muscular conditioning.

Physical Performance: Physical performance has several components. These include:

  • Strength

  • Stamina

  • Endurance

  • Coordination

  • Recovery

These qualities are highly dependent on training, nutrition, sleep, age, genetics and overall health.

Factors Affecting Men’s Vitality

1. Physical exercise

A sedentary lifestyle can decrease physical fitness and leads to the weaker healthy lifestyle. Regular physical activity supports cardiovascular and muscular fitness. WHO recommends that adults do moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity throughout the week, or muscle-strengthening activities at least two days of the week.

WHO suggests beginning with smaller amounts and gradually increasing frequency, intensity and duration. [2]

2. Nutrition

Nutrition provides the energy and nutrients needed to support normal physiological function and physical activity.

The ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition’s Dietary Guidelines for Indians focuses on a well-rounded diet, adequate quality protein rather than excessive reliance on individual supplements. The guidelines also warn against too much protein intake, especially in those with kidney disease.

A balanced diet includes:

  • Millets and whole grains

  • Legumes and Pulses

  • Vegetables

  • Fruit

  • Nuts & seeds

  • Milk or appropriate alternatives

  • Eggs, fish, or lean meat, where suitable

  • Healthy fat

 3. Sleep and Recovery

Sleep is involved in many physiological processes, including physical recovery, cognitive function and well-being. Healthy sleep habits are:

  • Keeping a consistent sleep schedule

  • Creating a dark, cosy sleeping environment

  • Reduce stimulating activities close to bedtime

  • Stress Management

  • Alcohol abuse

4. Stress and Mental Health

Chronic psychological stress can change sleep quality, concentration ability, motivation level, eating patterns, and exercise habits. Stress can also affect how someone perceives fatigue and their overall quality of life. [3]

Useful strategies are:

  • Physical activity

  • Meditation

  • Yoga

  • Breathing techniques

  • Get enough sleep

  • Outdoor Time

  • Social connectivity

  • Good work-life boundaries

5. Maintaining a Healthy Body Composition

Achieving and maintaining a normal body weight and body composition can promote physical mobility, cardiovascular health, metabolic health, and exercise capacity.

A sustainable approach involves:

  • Proper nutrition

  • Exercising regularly

  • Strength training

  • Get enough sleep

  • Long-run consistency

Everyone has different nutrition and fitness needs and goals based on age, health and physical ability.

Male Reproductive Health

Reproductive health is an important component of men’s overall health and well-being. Medical science, however, pays less attention to men's reproductive health than to women's, with narrow healthcare policies and little social understanding and education. In 2018, the Male Reproductive Health Initiative (MRHI) was established to promote the research and practice of male reproductive medicine. Genetic conditions, hormonal imbalances, infections and injuries can affect male reproductive health. Lifestyle factors including diet, drug use and exercise can also affect male reproductive health. When these factors disrupt the normal functioning of the male reproductive system, infertility may result.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 17.5% of couples of reproductive age worldwide suffer from infertility. Male factor infertility accounts for approximately 40 % of these problems and is a major public health concern for couples worldwide. The reports on the decrease of global fertility in men is increasing and average sperm concentration has been reported to have decreased as much as 50 % over the last 50 years. [4]

Factors that may affect reproductive health include:

  • Age

  • Nutrition status

  • Exercise

  • Body Weight

  • Sleep Stress

  • Smoking

  • Alcohol intake

  • Some medical conditions

  • Environmental exposures

Several parameters such as sperm concentration, motility and morphology may be included in the reproductive health in males.

Role of Nutrition and Lifestyle on Male Reproductive Health

1. Diet and Nutrition

Nutrition can positively or negatively influence the quality of sperm depending on the quantitative and qualitative aspects of a diet, such as the calorie content of each macronutrient (carbohydrates, proteins and fats), and the specific fatty acid, carbohydrate and protein profiles.

In this context, unhealthy hypercaloric diets, excessive intake of saturated and trans fatty acids has negative effects on sperm quality and consequently on the fertilisation process. In contrast, good dietary patterns are clearly associated with better sperm quality, suggesting that nutritional interventions could play an important part in the preservation of male fertility. Moreover, a good intake of antioxidant molecules has been very useful in the prevention and/or treatment of male infertility.

Diets rich in saturated fatty acids (SFA) and low in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) appear to have an adverse effect on sperm quality, while supplementation with unsaturated fatty acids improves sperm quality. Indeed, PUFA administration, particularly omega-3 PUFA, induced an increase in mitochondrial energetic metabolism and a decrease in oxidative damage. Carbohydrates and proteins are also nutritional modulators of oxidative stress and testosterone concentrations, which are strictly related to sperm mitochondrial function that is a key element for sperm quality. [5]

2. Lifestyle Factors

In the last decades, a significant decline has been observed in sperm quality in humans and lifestyle factors have contributed significantly to this decline. There are several lifestyle factors that are causing male infertility. Obesity, diet/nutrition, psychological stress, exposure to radiation, cigarette smoking, and alcohol use are all lifestyle factors that can contribute to male infertility. Lifestyle factors may have adverse effects on the quality of sperm, like sperm count, motility, morphology and sperm DNA. Lifestyle factors may also affect endocrine regulation of reproductive function. The decrease in male fertility has an important effect on fertility rates and the consequences for the human population make it a serious public health issue in the twenty-first century. Therefore, lifestyle interventions through a specific framework of educational, environmental, nutritional/physical exercise and psychological support along with the use of nutritional antioxidant supplements, can help couples achieve better health and well-being and improve their fertility prospects or increase their chances of conception.
